Are There Medical Treatments for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

There are medical treatments for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, however there is a limited window of opportunity for this treatment.  The first part of any treatment is to away from the Carbon Monoxide source. This may be your home, a vehicle or boat or where you work. By removing yourself from the Carbon Monoxide you are helping your body to recover from its effects. Depending upon your location and the knowledge of your healthcare providers there are advanced treatments available to you.

If your healthcare providers get to you within four (4) to six (6) hours of your exposure and your exposure was significant, there is a strong likelihood that they will send you for hypobaric oxygen treatment. There is scientific research that suggests that prompt treatment with hypobaric oxygen after exposure to carbon monoxide reduces the long term impact of that exposure. Unfortunately, if you are outside of this window, it is unlikely that the hypobaric oxygen treatment will make a significant impact on your long term prognosis.

If you have been exposed to Carbon Monoxide and are still feeling the effects, chronic headaches, fatigue, memory loss, anger issues, apathy, there are medical treatments available to help you cope with these conditions.

Unfortunately, many of these conditions may be permanent if you are still suffering from them two years after your exposure. There is some medical research which indicates that Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Victims can have spontaneous recovery from some if not all of their symptoms within two years of their exposure. Unfortunately, in the cases we have seen this has not been the case.

It is very important that if you have been poisoned by Carbon Monoxide that you seek medical treatment immediately. If you are suffering lingering effects from your exposure to Carbon Monoxide you need to seek medical treatment on an ongoing basis to monitor and control your symptoms. Follow up with a doctor often following a Carbon Monoxide exposure so that you keep on top of your symptoms if they persist and get the necessary medical treatment to help you deal with those symptoms, so that you may lead as near a normal life as possible.

Unfortunately, if you have had a significant Carbon Monoxide Poisoning your life will never be the same. You will be dealing with the effects of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning for the rest of your life. The effects are also emotionally devastating to you and your family. It is important that you and your family seek counseling if the effects of your Carbon Monoxide Exposure start to impact your relationship with your spouse or children. Proper medical and psychological care over the long term is essential to maintaining a good quality of life following Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

Do not become a victim of Carbon Monoxide twice; get the medical treatment and psychological treatment you need.
